Explore The Inspiration of Harry Potter

Are you visiting Edinburgh and looking to explore the inspiration for the best selling Harry Potter novels?

The Grassmarket Hotel are big fans of all things J. K. Rowling with many of the inspirational sights just moments from our hotels doorstep! So, don’t be a muggle, grab your Ron Weasley or Hermione Granger and take them on a tour of the following…

Victoria Street
(10 seconds walk from Grassmarket Hotel)

Said to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley, this colourful street located just next to our Grassmarket Hotel is filled with independent boutiques, cafes and restaurants.

The Elephant Café
(3 minutes walk from Grassmarket Hotel)

A must (and most renowned) location to visit in Edinburgh for Harry Potter fans will be the Elephant House Cafe, located at 21 George Street. This is where J. K. Rowling used to sit daily to write the first and second books, as it was cheaper for her to pay for a cup of coffee than to pay her heating bill at home. Needless to say, she finished on very different circumstances.

Greyfriars Kirkyard
(5 minutes walk from Grassmarket Hotel)

From the Elephant Cafe, J. K. Rowling could source much of her inspiration for what she saw out of her window. The first of these sights was nearby cemetery Greyfriars Kirkyard – where Tom Riddle’s grave resides which has now become a sight in itself for hardcore Harry Potter fans to pay respect to the Dark Lord.

George Heriot’s School
(6 minutes walk from Grassmarket Hotel)

Built in 1628, George Heriot’s School has four houses, four towers, and was a clear source of inspiration for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The Grassmarket Hotel has an ideal location for exploring the very best Edinburgh has to offer whether your a Harry Potter fan or not! With fresh fun bedrooms and style like no other, join us for a night or two soon at Grassmarket Hotel…

The Golf Tavern

Bruntsfield Links is the oldest short-hole golf course in the world and home of The Golf Tavern who have a prime location in one of Scotland’s very few free public golf courses, clubs are available for hire (for a small fee).

If you are joining us at The Grassmarket Hotel it’s a perfect excuse to tee off for an enjoyable afternoon at The Golf Tavern!

If you would like to hire golf clubs and balls, you can do this from The Golf Tavern. For keen golfers, this is a rare historic treat and it’s really worthwhile to say that you’ve had a bash at playing the oldest short-hole golf course in the world!

The Bruntsfield Links Society was founded in 1761. This group of golfers along with the Burgess Society shared the use of Bruntsfield Links for many years. Members for these clubs were made up of local merchants who enjoyed playing golf on the course and drinking ale in the nearby Golf Tavern.

No account of golf history in Scotland is complete without mention of Bruntsfield Links – golf has been played on the Links from as early as the 1700’s when The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh was founded.  Beautifully maintained by Edinburgh City Council’s local green keeper, Bruntsfield Links boasts a fantastic spot of suburban greenery within the bustling capital city.

Believed by some to be the oldest golf society in the world, this ancient golf club can trace its existence back to 1735 from public recordings made in the Edinburgh Almanac from 1834.

Dean Village

Dean Village truly is one of Edinburgh’s hidden gems and The Grassmarket Hotel highly recommends a visit if you are looking for a leisurely activity while visiting Edinburgh.

The Dean Village is a tranquil green oasis on the Water of Leith, only 10 minute walk from Princes Street.  In the past the village was the centre of the milling of water mills and the remnants of the industry can still be seen today. Look out for mill stones and carved stone plaques with baked bread and pies.

Follow the walkway along the Water of Leith and you will come to the impressive Dean Bridge designed by Thomas Telford, and the classical temple of St Bernard’s Well.

The most striking building in the Dean Village is Well Court, recently restored with the help of Edinburgh World Heritage. Built in the 1880s as model housing for local workers, it adds to the picturesque charm of the area.

A short walk from the village is the Dean Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art.

Both impressive classical buildings in their own right, now converted to their use as art galleries.

Dean Village is just one of the many exceptional places to explore if you are visiting Edinburgh and Grassmarket Hotel  is an ideal base to experience the city’s wonders.  Not only do we have bedrooms perfect for two to share, our Comfy + bedrooms can sleep four to three to four guests with style and fun in abundance!  Perfect for a weekend away to catch a show and experience the city!
